The Village on the Thames recently played host to a birthday party to celebrate the lives of two of the Chatham-Kent seniors living community’s centenarians, and even the town’s mayor stopped by to give his best wishes.
The 100th birthday party for Agnes Male and Nellie Russchen was held on Nov. 1 and included entertainment from Crystal St. Denis. Nellie turned 100 on Oct. 15; Agnes will turn 100 on Nov. 20.
Chatham-Kent Mayor Randy Hope attended the party to personally wish the ladies a happy birthday and took time to pose for photos with Agnes and Nellie.
Village on the Thames fun co-ordinator Tina Drew says both residents are remarkable ladies.
“Agnes is still very active; she comes to every program,” Tina says.
“She’s amazing – she wonders why more people don’t come out to programming. She will be at every program, unless she has a hair appointment.”
Agnes also celebrated a pre-birthday party with friends outside of Village on the Thames, notes Tina. Before moving into Village on the Thames, Agnes was a singer with a group, and during her party with friends she sang again, Tina says.
Like Agnes, Nellie participates in almost all activities at Village on the Thames. Tina describes Nellie as a “comical” resident because of her good nature and sense of humour.
During the party for Agnes and Nellie, Crystal was singing a song about blue eyes to Nellie, which she jokingly took exception to, Tina says.
“Nellie stopped her and said, ‘my eyes aren’t blue, they’re brown,’ and they had a good laugh about that.”
