Southgate Village fun co-ordinator Susan Davis came up with a creative idea recently to honour a resident who passed away this summer.
When the resident, named Alex, passed away in August, there was no memorial service for his friends at the Kingsville, Ont. seniors-living community to attend.
Knowing residents were missing Alex, Susan came up with an idea. She thought about two things Alex loved: bingo and Tim Hortons. So, Susan decided to have Southgate Village host a memorial bingo, with Tim Hortons gift cards as prizes.
On Grandparents Day – Sept. 10 – Southgate Village hosted a memorial bingo in honour of Alex.
“It was a way for the residents to remember him because they didn’t have a memorial service to attend, so this way they got to remember him,” Susan tells S&R Today.
Susan added another aspect of Alex’s personality to the event. The resident collected quarters and would roll them into $10 tubes and then ask staff to exchange the coins for paper money. It seemed fitting to have a $10 jackpot for some of the games, Susan says.
The event was a success, Susan says, noting the activity room where the bingo was held was packed with residents and staff.
Just before the bingo began, residents and staff members had a moment of silence to remember Alex, whom Susan describes as a fan-favourite amongst everyone.
“He was a real character who you just loved,” she says. “When I walk into the activity room where the bingo was played and I see his chair, I still think that he is going to be there.”
