Village on the Thames celebrated National Grandparents Day on Sept. 10 with a day full of food and fun that brought together more than 300 people at the Chatham-Kent seniors-living community.

Guests included residents, their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The party was hosted in Village on the Thames’ backyard. There was musical entertainment, face-painting and games. There was also a barbecue that featured hot dogs, hamburgers and an array of salads.

Village on the Thames’ annual Grandparents Day celebration has been the seniors-living community’s largest event so far this year, says fun co-ordinator Tina Drew.

Tina says the reason the event is so large each year is because it’s hosted outdoors and residents can invite as many people as they wish.

“And it gets bigger every year,” she tells S&R Today.

Tina says what residents enjoy most about each Grandparents Day celebration is the large number of children that attend. The event is also a community gathering that brings together lots of people who know each other, she adds.

“Seeing all the younger kids running around puts a smile on their faces, and because Chatham-Kent is so small, residents will run into other people they used to work with,” Tina says.

“The residents love to run into familiar faces and have everybody together.”

Grandparents Day is held the second Sunday in September in many countries around the world to celebrate grandparents. The day was first recognized in 1978 in the U.S.
