The Steeves & Rozema Group is once again partnering with the Sarnia Community Foundation to offer the Steeves & Rozema Health Care Scholarship to students pursuing careers in the health-care sector.
Steeves & Rozema set up the scholarship fund with the Sarnia Community Foundation in 2010 because the organization wanted to give back to Sarnia and Lambton County, says Sarnia Community Foundation executive director Jane Anema.
“S&R is an extremely generous community supporter, and in conversations with (S&R CEO) John Scotland and (S&R co-founder) John Rozema, there was a sense that if they could support students who might be interested in working in health care, that (the community) would be better off,” Jane tells S&R Today.
Scholarships are open to students living in Sarnia and Lambton County who are enrolled in a post-secondary institution with their sights set on becoming doctors, nurses, personal support workers, physiotherapists or nurse practitioners.
“And the nice thing about this scholarship is that it is renewable – if you are a nursing student, for example, and you’re in Year 1, you have three more years that you could potentially get a scholarship,” Jane explains.
The scholarship is supported through an endowment fund held at the Sarnia Community Foundation. The foundation facilitates the intake of applications, and Steeves & Rozema determines how many scholarships will be awarded for a given year and how much each scholarship will be worth.
Steeves & Rozema’s mission is “creating communities that are good for life.” The Sarnia Community Foundation’s mission is to “build better communities.” It’s a natural fit for the organizations to work together, Jane says.
“That’s such a neat dovetail,” she says. “Everything we do is focused on how to support the community, how to make it better. … Given that this is our mandate, it’s just a really natural fit to do that with S&R.”
The scholarship’s application deadline is 4 p.m. on Oct. 27 at the Sarnia Community Foundation’s office. Scholarships will be presented in January or February.
