In the spirit of giving back to the local community, Residence on the St. Clair raised $255 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada on June 14 during the retirement home’s annual strawberry social.

For $5, residents, families, staff members and visitors received a strawberry dessert and were eligible for a door prize. They could also enter a raffle.

Entertainer Steve Lane played music in the background while everyone mingled and enjoyed their fresh strawberry dessert, says the home’s fun co-ordinator Natalie Cataford.

On June 16, Carrie Willis, a representative from the Heart and Stroke Foundation, stopped by Residence on the St. Clair to thank residents and staff members for their hard efforts to raise money for the charity. Carrie was also presented with a cheque for $255.

She spoke with residents about the work and research the Heart and Stroke Foundation helps fund through donations like theirs. She included success stories of children who have had strokes and open-heart surgeries from a young age, which struck a chord with everyone.

“It was very enlightening to hear these success stories and realize that strokes and heart disease not only affect older people but many younger individuals as well,” Natalie says.
