Lanark Heights resident Cynthia Ruddock and staff member Marsha Anderson are seen here during the home’s Parkinson Society fundraiser.

Lanark Heights hosted its annual walk in support of the Parkinson Society Sept. 9. The event saw 23 of the Kitchener long-term care home’s residents and 22 of its staff members go for a stroll to raise money for the organization.

Residents and staff members raised $535 for the Parkinson Society.

“It was a great way for our residents and staff to raise awareness of Parkinson’s disease and to donate to the cause of raising money (for the Parkinson Society), and it was a great way to get the residents outside and going around the neighbourhood with staff,” says Nathan McFadyen, Lanark Heights’ life enrichment manager.

McFadyen notes there are residents living at Lanark Heights who have Parkinson’s disease, a condition of the nervous system which impacts movement and causes tremors, so the event was also a way to show support for those residents living with Parkinson’s.

The event is organized each year by Sherri Anger, Lanark Heights’ assistant manager of resident care.

Before the 45-minute walk, residents and staff members raised money from friends and family members who sponsored them. The walk took participants around two blocks and back to the duck pond on the trail behind the home.

McFadyen notes that the fundraiser falls in line with the Steeves & Rozema Group’s mission of “creating communities that are good for life” as well as being a chance for everyone to get outside and explore the neighbourhood.

“It was an extremely enjoyable day,” he says. “The residents who went on the walk really enjoyed being outside and getting out to show their support for people with Parkinson’s disease and to raise money for the cause.”
