Trillium Villa launches annual flu vaccination campaign

Trillium Villa has launched its annual campaign to vaccinate team members at the Sarnia long-term care community against the flu during National Infection Control Week.
Once again, Karen Grennan, Trillium Villa's infection control lead, set up a flu-vaccine clinic the week of Oct. 19 with the help of nursing student Samantha Duncan.
Karen, who has overseen the vaccine clinic every Infection Control Week for the past five years, runs the clinic in the morning and afternoon to ensure all team members can get their vaccine.
And she does a great job, says Essie Lopes, Trillium Villa's resident services co-ordinator.
“She's a pro and takes pride when giving a painless jab,” Essie tells S&R Today.
After team members get vaccinated, they have a chance to enter a draw to win one of three prizes and grab a sweet treat on their way out, Essie adds.
According to the World Health Organization, there are several benefits to getting a flu vaccination, including:
- Reducing infection rates by 30 to 60 per cent
- Preventing severe complications or illness if infected
- Protecting others around you
- Reducing the risk of a heart attack
While there can be side effects from the flu vaccination, they are generally mild and go away within hours or a few days, according to Health Canada.
Side effects, when they do occur, typically include mild fever, fatigue, chills, joint and muscle soreness, and headache.
“This is the body's natural response, as it's working hard to build immunity against the disease,” Health Canada says on its website.
Starting Oct. 26, free flu vaccinations are available to everyone six months of age and older who lives in Ontario.
