Heron Terrace marks Community Engagement Day with focus on fraud prevention

Heron Terrace residents and team members recently celebrated Community Engagement Day for the third straight year, with this year's event focused on protecting seniors from scams and fraud.
This year, the Windsor long-term care community welcomed a Windsor Police Service representative who shared information and advice on protecting seniors from scams and fraud, explains life enrichment manager Sheila Dela Pena-Romero, adding that the presentation was well-received by residents.
“It was a wonderful success,” she tells S&R Today. “The program reminded everyone to be cautious of their surroundings and that safety should always be a priority.”
The officer reminded residents that if they receive any suspicious or unusual phone calls, they should seek help and contact 9-1-1 when there is an immediate safety concern.
Another special highlight was a visit from Windsor-Tecumseh MPP Andrew Dowie, who spent time connecting with residents, families and team members.
“He took time to hear their concerns and answered their questions politely,” Sheila says, adding that the MPP joined in by hosting the 50-50 draw for residents' council.
MPP Dowie also presented Heron Terrace administrator Athena Aird with a certificate of appreciation, followed by a photo opportunity with residents and staff.
As with all Community Engagement Day celebrations, food was an important part of the event. Food services manager Tulip barbecued hot dogs, and samosas from a local Indian restaurant were also served.
The celebration continued throughout the home with fun games, temporary tattoos, stickers and prizes for everyone to enjoy.
“It was truly amazing to see our residents, families and staff come together to connect with our community leaders and create memories together,” Sheila says.
