'It was a beautiful afternoon of generations coming together, sharing joy and creating memories'

Heron Terrace turned its Grandparents' Day celebration into an afternoon of intergenerational programming that brought together residents, their children and grandchildren.

Much of the event was aimed at providing younger children with activities organized by team members and volunteers at the Windsor long-term care community, including face-painting, colouring and dancing – and residents were encouraged to join in the fun. There was even an impromptu puppet show, thanks to one creative resident.

Children enjoyed face-painting sessions organized by volunteer Nagar. There was also a large colouring board displayed on the wall for children to decorate, while additional colouring activities were set up on tables for residents to join the children and share in the creative activity, explains Sheila Dela Pena-Romero, Heron Terrace's life enrichment manager.

Resident Carol enjoyed participating in a colouring activity with one of the children, and afterwards they enjoyed a glass of lemonade and freshly baked cookies together, Sheila says.

There were also plenty of special treats and snacks to enjoy throughout the afternoon. Sheila says “one of the sweetest moments” happened when one of the residents, Mari, brought out his puppet named Happy to entertain the children with jokes and funny stories, she adds.

The puppet show, Sheila says, brought “even more excitement, laughter, and smiles to the room.”

“It was a beautiful afternoon of generations coming together, sharing joy and creating memories; the kids loved every minute of it,” Sheila tells S&R Today.

“This enjoyable afternoon gave everyone a chance to meet, visit and make special memories together.”

Sheila says the day was also a reminder of the importance of intergenerational programming.

“Grandparents' Day reminded us that a little laughter, simple treats, fun activities and time spent together can make a truly special day at Heron Terrace,” she says.

National Grandparents' Day is held on the second Sunday in September in Canada and many other countries around the world to celebrate grandparents. The day was first recognized in 1978 in the U.S.
