Heron Terrace celebrates Indian Independence Day with food, culture and history
Team members share traditions and fun facts with residents during special afternoon celebration

Heron Terrace residents and team members celebrated Indian Independence Day on Aug. 15 with an afternoon of culture, history, food and fun.
Sheila Dela Pena-Romero, the Windsor long-term care community's life enrichment manager, says six team members from her department are from India, so this made planning the event extra special.
Indian Independence Day marks India's 1947 independence from British colonial rule.
During the event, residents and team members enjoyed Indian specialties, such as samosas and gulab jamun, the famous Indian dessert made of fried milk-solid balls soaked in sweet syrup, from a local Indian restaurant. There was also freshly made rose syrup milk and chai tea.
The team members who are from India led a presentation where they shared interesting tidbits and fun facts about Indian history with residents and staff. They even brought flags and dressed in traditional clothing.
Heron Terrace resident Alex, a retired chef, says he “loves” Indian food. He says he also enjoys learning about Indian culture and history.
“As a retired chef, I kind of relived the moment of being around different kind of food – some spicy, sweet and tangy,” Alex says. “I had five samosas with two kinds of chutneys and tried all drinks, and they were all fantastic.”
Sheila says what she liked most about the event was seeing residents enjoying an Indian dance and seeing the traditional clothing team members wore.
“This brought smiles, applause and lots of joy to everyone,” Sheila says. “Their laughter and heartfelt appreciation motivates me and my team more to go above and beyond when it comes to planning any program that they will benefit from.”
Sheila adds that she is proud of the way life enrichment team members support one another while working to create meaningful experiences for residents.
“As life enrichment manager, I am really proud to have this kind of team who support one another, and they love the residents,” she says.
