Heron Terrace residents are growing something special together
Shallows Lane residents, family members and team members work together to create a colourful garden

The residents of a Heron Terrace neighbourhood recently made the most of sunny, warm weather to plant their favourite flowers, vegetables and herbs in the Windsor long-term care community's garden.
With support from the life enrichment team, several residents from Shallows Lane, one of five neighbourhoods at Heron Terrace, spent an afternoon planting and tending to the garden.
Team members supplied the gardening tools and supplies, and thanks to the “incredible dedication” of one family member who volunteered to help clean the garden, cut the grass and provide some supplies, “the day became a wonderful community effort,” says Sheila Dela Pena-Romero, Heron Terrace's life enrichment manager.
But it was the residents who showed the most enthusiasm when it came to rolling up their sleeves and doing the work, Sheila says.
“Residents eagerly joined in,” she tells S&R Today. “Some residents even stood up to dig the soil themselves.”
With the flowers and herbs in the soil, it's now time to care for the plants, and residents have been busy making sure they are watered.
Sheila says tending to the flowers has been important to residents because the plants are part of their home. The flowers, she adds, have brightened the area, “creating a cheerful and welcoming atmosphere filled with pride and joy.”
And the residents are enjoying watching their garden grow, Sheila says.
“Each day brings excitement as they water their garden and watch it grow,” she says. “(The residents are) looking forward to harvesting their vegetables and enjoying another patio social together.”
Theresa, one of the family members who participated in the gardening, says she wanted to help make Shallows Lane's patio more welcoming for her mother.
“I think my mom will enjoy seeing the colours in the garden, like what she used to have,” Theresa says.
Sheila says that seeing residents, family members and team members work together to improve the neighbourhood was especially rewarding.
“It was really fun to see residents, family and staff working together to make their home feels like a home,” she says.
