People around the globe caught World Cup fever this summer, and the residents and team members at Heron Terrace were no exception.

Inspired by the 2026 FIFA World Cup, team members at the Windsor, Ont. long-term care community organized a two-day games tournament, where residents competed in friendly matches of beach-ball hockey and balloon badminton.

Residents from each home area formed teams of six to eight players and competed in the fun-filled events, which Sheila Dela Pena-Romero, Heron Terrace's life enrichment manager, says brought out plenty of friendly competition.

“Laughter, cheers and team spirit filled the hallways as everyone gave their best effort,” she tells S&R Today.

The winning teams from Day 1 returned for the championship matches on Day 2, where the winners faced one another and the remaining teams competed for their final standings, Sheila explains.

After some “exciting and closely contested games,” the champions were announced. Whether they won or not, every participant walked away with smiles, fond memories and a strong sense of camaraderie, Sheila adds.

S&R Group long-term care and seniors living communities encourage creativity among team members. Life enrichment teams often draw inspiration from current events, such as the FIFA World Cup, Stanley Cup playoffs and Olympic Games, to tap into residents' interests and encourage friendly competition.

Sheila says events like this are a great way to bring residents together while creating opportunities for fun, connection and shared experiences.

“It was wonderful to see everyone enjoying themselves, embracing a little healthy competition and celebrating the joy of being active together,” Sheila says.
