In an effort to maintain a high standard of skin health among residents, Twin Lakes Terrace recently hosted an educational week dedicated to helping residents, their families and team members learn how to prevent skin lesions.

Skin and Wound Week was created as part of the Sarnia long-term care community's quality improvement plan, explains life enrichment manager Kendra Donkers.

During the week, participants learned about factors that contribute to skin breakdown and the strategies staff use to prevent, manage and improve skin and wound care for residents.

“Throughout the week, we shared educational information, engaged participants in interactive games to test and reinforce knowledge, and encouraged open discussion about best practices in skin integrity,” Kendra tells S&R Today.

“These activities helped strengthen understanding and awareness in a fun and supportive environment.”

Maintaining skin integrity is important in long-term care because healthy skin plays a key role in residents' quality of life. Skin breakdown can lead to pain, infection, reduced mobility and other complications that can affect a person's overall health and well-being.

Kendra says the Twin Lakes Terrace team wanted as much engagement in Skin and Wound Week as possible. To help promote the event, a barbecue was organized for residents, their families and team members.

“This provided an opportunity to build relationships, celebrate teamwork, and reflect on the importance of collaborative care in supporting resident well-being,” she says.
