The Village on the St. Clair life enrichment team provided the men living at the Sarnia seniors living community with a Father's Day surprise they won't soon forget.

When the men sat down for a special Father's Day luncheon on June 19, they were each presented with a personalized sports trading card featuring themselves as players on their favourite teams.

The custom cards were handed out as the dining room was transformed into a sports-themed pub complete with hockey jerseys, sports memorabilia and a three-course meal featuring creatively named menu items such as “power-play roast beef,” “MVP (most valuable pasta) salad” and “batter-up pickles.”

In the days leading up to the event, the life enrichment team visited each resident to learn about his favourite sports team. Staff then transformed each resident's photo into a player on that team and created custom trading cards featuring his “statistics” – including years of experience (his age), “number of cookies eaten this week” and other fun facts, explains fun co-ordinator Evelyn Babcock.

“The residents' reactions when they received their cards were one of the highlights of the day,” Evelyn tells S&R Today.

“Many were delighted by the surprise, and several shared stories from their younger years playing sports. A few even commented that it had been a very long time since they had seen themselves wearing a sports jersey.”

Evelyn says the Father's Day luncheon was a success that brought everyone together.

“It was a wonderful afternoon filled with laughter, memories and plenty of team spirit as we celebrated the fathers and father figures in our community,” she says.
