By enrolling in the Ontario Retirement Communities Association's (ORCA's) Leadership Development Program, Loraine Ormega says she gained more than new skills – she developed a broader perspective on leadership in seniors living.
Loraine recently became the second team member in S&R's Seniors Living Division to graduate from the program, which helps prepare people working in retirement communities for future leadership roles.
ORCA's Leadership Development Program is a six-month, self-paced course designed to help retirement community staff members enhance their skills, improve operational productivity and prepare for leadership roles while remaining in their current positions.
“What I enjoyed most about the Leadership Development Program was that it challenged me to think beyond my day-to-day responsibilities and focus on the bigger picture of leadership in seniors living,” Loraine tells S&R Today.
“As someone who has grown within the organization, from part-time receptionist to marketing supervisor and now business manager, I found it valuable to learn how leadership evolves as your responsibilities grow.”
Loraine says one of the program's key lessons was the importance of leading through influence, accountability and empowerment.
The program, she adds, helped her gain a greater understanding of how to support colleagues, provide motivation and be a positive leader during times of change.
“It also reinforced the value of self-awareness and continuous learning as a leader,” she says.
Another benefit of the program, Loraine says, was that it strengthened her confidence in her role at Landmark Village and reinforced her commitment to helping residents feel at home while ensuring team members feel empowered and valued.
“More than anything, it reminded me that great leadership is measured not by titles, but by the positive and lasting impact we have on the lives of others,” she says.
Loraine encourages other S&R team members to consider taking the program.
“The self-paced format makes it manageable alongside a busy role, and the content is practical, relevant and immediately applicable,” she says. “It challenged me to think more strategically, reflect on my leadership approach and continue growing as a leader.”
Loraine is also expressing appreciation to the S&R Group for providing her with the opportunity to participate in the program.
“Their commitment to employee development has been invaluable, and I am grateful for the support and encouragement that made this experience possible,” she says.
Earlier this year, Celia Nagy, director of wellness at Lanark Village in Kitchener, became the first team member in S&R's Seniors Living Division to graduate from the program (see April 1, 2026 S&R Today story).
