St. Andrew's Terrace residents recently enjoyed a unique outing where they got to see and interact with a wide variety of butterflies and animals.

On May 27, residents of the Cambridge long-term care community, along with volunteers and staff members, visited the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory, an outing that proved to be a big hit with everyone, says life enrichment manager Dana Blaber.

Located on 107 acres, the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory is open year-round and fully accessible. The conservatory includes an indoor tropical garden that is home to thousands of free-flying butterflies.

In addition, the conservatory features many species of birds, animals and tropical plants.

During their visit, residents walked through the tropical greenhouse and saw a wide array of butterflies, Dana says. They also enjoyed seeing the variety of birds, turtles and axolotls – an endangered species of mole salamander – that call the conservatory home

Dana says this is exactly the sort of outing residents enjoy because of the many benefits it provides.

“The residents always enjoy this little nature escape, and it's a great sensory opportunity with so many colours and sounds,” she tells S&R Today.

Dana adds that St. Andrew's Terrace residents and team members also visited the conservatory in January. During that trip, one of the residents' favourite activities was trying to encourage butterflies to land on them – something that did not happen during this visit.

“They loved trying to get the butterflies to land on them, but we had no success this time around,” she says.
