Representatives from the S&R Group recently met with students to discuss career opportunities in long-term care and seniors living as part of World of Choices, a youth career-exploration event.
World of Choices is a program hosted by Junior Achievement Canada (JA Canada) that connects students in Grades 8 through 12 with employers and professionals from a variety of sectors to help them explore career options and shape future goals.
During the event, students participate in interactive sessions designed to introduce them to different career paths and help them learn firsthand what it takes to be successful, explains Mahyar Garmsiri, S&R's HR talent acquisition specialist.
Mahyar, who attended the event with Naomi Stevens, S&R's director of resident experience and programs, says they connected with students and spoke about the wide array of opportunities in the long-term care and seniors living sectors, as well as S&R's culture.
“Naomi and I were employers in the small-group discussions and talked to individuals about careers in long-term care and seniors living (communities) as well as offered them insight and advice about how to pursue their careers of interest, or even how to find a career that might interest them,” Mahyar tells S&R Today.
Following the event, JA Canada shared some of the feedback the organization received from students attending, and there were many encouraging responses.
“My favourite part was having the opportunity to have direct, one-on-one conversations with an adult who I want to be like in 10 years,” one student said.
Several students said they enjoyed learning about the variety of careers available in today's job market, with many noting they learned about options they had not previously considered.
Some also said they appreciated hearing directly from people working in different sectors.
“I liked having insight on different jobs in different industries instead of only talking about the education needed for it,” a student wrote.
Mahyar says one of the benefits of World of Choices is the strong interaction the event fosters and the way students are encouraged to take ownership of their career exploration.
“This experience clarifies career and educational pathways, and students become actively engaged in designing their own career path,” he says.
