A collaboration between Trillium Villa and a program offered through the College of Nurses of Ontario is helping internationally educated nurses earn their qualifications to become registered nurses in Canada.
Four of the Sarnia long-term care community's personal support workers (PSWs) have recently participated in the Supervised Practice Experience Partnership (SPEP) program, with three having completed their requirements and another is awaiting their licence, Lynn Nickels, manager of resident care at Trillium Villa, tells S&R Today.
The SPEP program is designed to help internationally educated nurses meet Canadian licensing requirements and transition into nursing roles.
Through the program, applicants work alongside a registered nurse in a health-care setting to demonstrate nursing knowledge, skills and judgment.
The group of Trillium Villa PSWs includes Jinali Shah, Nirmal Khristi, Navrose Kaur and Tirth Gurjar. RN Teresa Amy was the preceptor for Jinali, Nirmal and Navrose, while RN Stephen Bugg was the preceptor for Tirth.
“The four team members worked alongside their RN preceptor to learn the role of the RN and build their skill set and capacity,” Lynn explains.
“During their placement, they completed assessments, documentation, enhanced their clinical practice and provided direct resident care.”
As part of the program, the students must also assess their learning needs, identify learning goals and develop a learning plan for their supervised practice experience, Lynn adds.
Jinali, Nirmal and Navrose are now registered nurses, and Tirth has completed his hours and is awaiting his licence.
In a message to Lynn, one of the students expressed appreciation for the opportunity they were given by Trillium Villa to meet their RN requirements at the Sarnia long-term care community.
“I really valued my placement here and I was very thankful for the opportunity I was given to complete my hours.”
