Trillium Villa residents treated to a tasty April Fools' Day surprise

Brownie social takes a playful turn before residents are served treats and entertainment

When Trillium Villa residents gathered for what they were told was a “brownie social” on April 1, they were expecting to find a platter of chewy, chocolatey squares waiting for them.

But they soon realized they were on the receiving end of an April Fools' Day prank.

Instead of a brownie on their plate, residents found a piece of paper with a "brown 'E'” written on it waiting for them on Christmas-themed plates, explains Tara Klompstra, the Sarnia long-term care community's life enrichment manager.

Tara says some of the remarks she heard included, “I thought we were having brownies?”, “Is this a joke?” and “We just had Christmas – what is this?”

But then the residents realized the word play.

“Laughter filled the room; the life enrichment team successfully pulled off an April Fools' Day prank,” Tara tells S&R Today.

Team members then made up for the joke they had just played, Tara adds, as residents were soon served brownies, ice cream and hot chocolate.

“(It helped us) celebrate the funniest April Fools' Day 'gotcha' moment together, while watching World's Funniest Videos,” she says.

Tara notes that laughter for seniors offers significant health and social benefits. Laughter, she says, boosts emotional well-being and enhances relationships. It also promotes social connection and mental stimulation.

With this in mind, there will likely be future April Fools' Day jokes, Tara says.

“The life enrichment team already has a few tricks up their sleeve for next year.”
