The Easter Bunny was hopping around Westmount Gardens recently, bringing big smiles to residents' faces.
Just before Easter, Katie, the partner of life enrichment team member Li Boone, dressed up in an Easter Bunny costume and made quite an impression on the London, Ont., long-term care community's residents, says Adnan Resh.
Adnan, Westmount's life enrichment manager, notes that Katie was the perfect person to play the Easter Bunny for residents – she was previously a mascot at her high school and at Humber College, and she even went through mascot training.
“Katie was very excited when I told Li that she can play the Easter Bunny,” Adnan tells S&R Today. “This has been something she missed doing and it brought her back to her roots. She excelled at being the mascot and lifted the spirits of many residents and staff.”
Katie played the Easter Bunny on the first floor for several hours in the afternoon, while Li played the Bunny's helper and went around to snap pictures of Katie and the residents.
Adnan says Li told him that Katie “loved every moment” of playing the Easter Bunny and thanked him for organizing the day's events.
“I have to be the one thanking her, as she did such an amazing job,” Adnan says.
Katie says the pleasure was hers.
“It was a delight to hop around and see all the smiling faces,” she says.
Li says Katie made a positive impact on everyone the Easter Bunny met.
“It's amazing and heartwarming to see the reactions from residents, families and the staff,” Li says. “The awe and wonder is not lost, no matter the age, and I think it's important to keep that alive.”
Katie has already offered to come back to play future costumed roles at Westmount Gardens if needed, which has given Adnan an idea.
“We have never had Mrs. Claus visit the residents, so this very well might happen during Christmastime,” he says.
