Celia Nagy holds her certificate after completing ORCA's Leadership Development Program.

Celia Nagy is the first team member in S&R's Seniors Living Division to complete the Ontario Retirement Communities Association's (ORCA's) Leadership Development Program, an experience she says has equipped her with practical tools to enhance her daily work and prepare for future leadership roles.

Celia, the director of wellness at Lanark Village in Kitchener, describes her experience in the program as “a great step” towards future opportunities within S&R, as the organization has a culture of promoting team members from within.

“I have taken very generalized leadership courses in the past, but not specific to the retirement-community sector and the roles that surround it, so I found this to be extremely valuable,” Celia tells S&R Today.

“This course offered more that is in line with the retirement sector's specific needs.”

Celia says she was inspired to take the course for one reason: she enjoys learning.

She adds that one of the most valuable takeaways from the program for her was acquiring a firmer grasp of Retirement Homes Regulatory Authority (RHRA) expectations. The RHRA is Ontario's regulator that licenses and inspects retirement communities to ensure safety and compliance.

“There were some good resources given that typically I would only get if I asked for them from an inspector,” Celia says, noting that ORCA also provided documentation used by the RHRA to ensure standards are met, allowing retirement community team members to put those tools into practice.

ORCA's Leadership Development Program is a six-month, self-paced course designed to help retirement community staff members enhance their skills and prepare for leadership roles.

ORCA says the program gives participants a deeper understanding of what it takes to lead, while strengthening their skill sets, supporting career advancement and offering networking opportunities.

Asked what she would say to other team members working in Seniors Living Division who were interested in pursuing the program, Celia says she would tell them it's an opportunity to gain valuable insight into leadership roles.

“I would say it's a very good program to delve into if you're interested in becoming an executive director or moving toward operations management,” she says.
