Heron Terrace residents got in some top-notch exercise time during a high-energy Zumba class recently at the Windsor, Ont., long-term care community.

Mervat El-Ainain, Heron Terrace's volunteer co-ordinator, says the Zumba class drew a strong turnout and saw plenty of enthusiasm from residents.

The session was led by Joanna, a local Zumba instructor, who created a fun and welcoming atmosphere by incorporating music and songs residents enjoyed, Mervat says.

Residents were excited and actively participated in the exercises, moving along to the rhythm of the music, she adds.

The benefits were immediate, Mervat notes.

“The combination of physical activity and music brought smiles, laughter and positive energy to everyone involved,” she tells S&R Today.

Developed in 2001 in Colombia, Zumba combines moves from Latin dance styles with aerobics. The program is designed to be inclusive and focuses on rhythmic movement and enjoyment rather than technical perfection, making it accessible for people of all ages, abilities and fitness levels.

While Zumba provides a physical workout, Mervat says it also offers cognitive and social benefits for residents.

“The Zumba session was a wonderful way for residents to stay active, socialize and have fun together,” she says.
