Several Westmount Gardens residents shared their love advice in the days leading up to Valentine's Day (Feb. 14), thanks to a creative idea from a member of the London, Ont., long-term care community's life enrichment team.

Cheryl Dwyer came up with the idea of getting love advice from residents living in the Iris neighbourhood, and they did not fail to please.

“I chose to do this because I was thinking about how incredible it is that most of our residents and their significant others have been together for longer than I have even been around,” Cheryl tells S&R Today.

“What also stuck out to me is the fact that we have some residents who live here at Westmount Gardens whose significant others are still living back at their houses but they come in daily to visit their loved one. This made me think, 'who better to ask for advice on love than our residents?'”

Residents were eager to share their thoughts.

Randy says, “Always look good.”
Anne says, “Be happy and get along.”
Kathie says, “Be Kind and caring. You have to show love to be loved.”
Betty says, “No one is perfect, forgiveness is key.”
Ruth says, “If he's great. Don't let him go.”
Roy says, “Take a chance.”
Larry says, “Be a giver, not a taker.”
Myrna says, “Pick a good person to begin with.”

“Westmount Gardens is so full of love and couples who inspire us each day, and it was truly heartwarming to hear the advice of those who have endured so much but remain strong as ever and just as much in love as when they first met,” Cheryl says.

Adnan Resh, Westmount Gardens' life enrichment manager, is commending Cheryl for the idea, adding the home's residents “have the most amazing stories” about how they met their spouses and remember the smallest details, such as the first meal they shared, where they went for their first date, or how the weather was, “like it just happened yesterday.”

Adnan notes there are also several resident couples living at Westmount Gardens.

“Westmount Gardens is great with reuniting resident spouses, so we do have a good handful of couples who live together, and I just love seeing them together and caring for one another, still holding hands and giving pecks on the cheeks, laughing and playing dominoes together like they used to,” he says.
