A month of focused rehabilitation has helped Twin Lakes Terrace resident Ken Chilvers regain mobility and return to daily life after a hip fracture sidelined him this past autumn.
On Oct. 22, Ken sustained a right hip fracture after a fall. He was admitted to hospital and underwent surgery to repair his hip.
Prior to his fall, Ken was highly independent in all aspects of daily living and took pride in maintaining that independence, says Danielle Rogers, the Sarnia long-term care community's nursing rehab co-ordinator.
Ken returned to Twin Lakes Terrace on Oct. 30 with physical restrictions in place. He was also experiencing “significant pain” and required assistance with transfers and walking, Danielle notes.
Following his readmission, Ken began working on physiotherapy programs focused on improving his balance and walker training.
But on Nov. 4, Ken's pain level increased, and he was provided with a wheelchair, with the walker deemed unsafe for his mobility. That day, team members approached Ken to discuss joining the nursing rehabilitation program to focus on strength and transfer training.
Ken said he was interested and began his rehab program on Dec. 15, initially focusing on improving ambulation and transfers.
“Ken diligently worked with the physiotherapy and nursing rehab teams daily, showing dedication to improving his abilities and relearning tasks he was once able to do independently,” Danielle tells S&R Today.
On Jan. 7, Ken's transfers were reassessed and he was deemed safe to transfer with supervision.
Since working with the nursing rehab team, physiotherapy and front-line team members, Ken has been able to resume the lifestyle he missed and enjoyed prior to his injury, Danielle says.
“Ken has also resumed attending activities within the home and says he is happy to be able to do the things he loves with his spouse,” she adds.
