Southgate Village residents have been busy over the holiday season and into the new year knitting clothing that is being donated to local organizations to help keep adults and children in need across the Kingsville area warm.

Residents of the seniors living community have been knitting a wide variety of hats, mittens and blankets that are then placed on the Angel Tree, a Christmas tree at Southgate Village. The items are then donated to several charities and organizations in the region.

For many years, Southgate Village residents made baby hats that were sent to the local hospital to be given to newborns. However, since the hospital now has an ample supply of hats, residents and team members decided to send clothing to other charities and organizations.

Valerie Judas, the Village's fun co-ordinator, says she started phoning around to those in her circle asking for ideas. Some of the suggestions she pursued include a local shelter, food bank, a school and a pregnancy clinic.

“Our residents have donated countless clothes and hats to the homelessness centre in our nearby town, and the food bank has also been a recipient of our generous residents and staff,” Valerie tells S&R Today.

As of this writing, there have been 63 hats made in several sizes, three scarves and one blanket that have been sent to the Leamington Community Hope Centre, the Melo Clinic and Pregnancy Centre, and WONDERfield Community School, Valerie notes.

“So far, one resident has made 50 hats for donation this year, and there is more to come,” she says.
