Since starting her position as Rosewood Village's fun co-ordinator in May, Alexandra Doornbosch says the most exciting part of her job has been learning as much as she can from each of the Sarnia seniors living community's residents and team members.

“Since starting here, I have really enjoyed getting to know all of the amazing people,” she tells S&R Today.

Alexandra graduated from the two-year recreation therapy program at Mohawk College in Hamilton in June. Complementing her diploma are several certificates from programs geared towards working with seniors and more than 560 hours of placement experience.

Her first placement was at a long-term care home, her second was at a hospital and her third was in a retirement home.

“I used all of these placements to learn and soak up as much as I could to be prepared for the working field of recreation therapy,” Alexandra says.

Looking ahead, Alexandra says she wants to continue to learn how to best tailor the activity calendars to residents' needs in order to provide the best Rosewood Village experience.

One thing she says she has learned from this is that residents' interests change “very quickly” as occupancy changes.

For example, some months may have activity calendars filled with social programs, some may have mostly activities that are cognitively challenging, and some months may have mostly creative programs, Alexandra says.

“No matter what the interest may be, I'm doing my best to learn how to pick up on what that interest is and design the calendars with the intention of meeting the residents' needs,” she says.

“My goal is to continue to grow and change as the resident population and interests change, and to never stop growing and learning both for and with these amazing people.”
