When a Westmount Gardens resident recently said he wished for a steak dinner, the life enrichment and food services teams at the London, Ont., long-term care community joined forces to make it happen.
Not only did the resident get his steak dinner, five other residents joined him during a candlelight lunch that was followed by loads of compliments from those attending, says Adnan Resh, Westmount's life enrichment manager.
The life enrichment team decorated the auditorium with white tablecloths, flameless candles and placemats. Team members put on soft jazz music to add to the ambience.
Adnan says the food was amazing, adding that Cheryl Speers, Westmount's food service manager, “barbecued the steaks to perfection.”
The steaks Cheryl prepared were topped with mushrooms and were accompanied by peas and loaded baked potatoes. There was also a starter salad and a dessert that Adnan says was “out of this world,” noting even a famous celebrity chef would praise the results.
“Cheryl knocked it out of the park with the cooking, and I think Gordon Ramsay would be jealous,” Adnan tells S&R Today. “Cheryl was so excited leading up to this day, and she did not fail to please. The six residents were in awe of the meal.”
After the meal, Adnan asked the residents to rate it out of five stars. Some of the reviews were:
“Definitely six stars.”
“Five stars, hands down.”
“The best meal I have had in years.”
Since the meal was such a hit, there are plans to repeat it with another group of residents in the future. Adnan says teamwork between himself, Cheryl Speers, Cheryl Dwyer and Li Boone helped make the event a success.
“This couldn't have gone over any better, honestly, and I am thankful for such an amazing team coming together and just executing such a great program,” he says.
