Lanark Heights residents, family members and staff came together the week of Remembrance Day for several days of programming to honour Canada's veterans and those who lost their lives in service to the country.
The special programs offered during the week included:
- Painting “remembrance rocks” with messages of peace and gratitude
- Crafting poppy artwork while sharing memories and stories
- Group discussions about history, resilience and the meaning of Remembrance Day
- Preparing decorations and displays for the ceremony
- Dress-Like a Poppy Day: Staff and residents proudly wore red and black
A commemorative wall featuring phrases and reflections written by the Kitchener long-term care community's residents was also created, “adding a personal and heartwarming touch to our display,” Karla Verdesoto, Lanark Heights' life enrichment manager, explains.
Karla adds that the week was marked by “reflection, creativity and gratitude.”
On Nov. 11, Lanark Heights hosted a Remembrance Day ceremony. Administrator Hildy Nickel served as the speaker for the event, guiding attendees through a moment of reflection and gratitude. Surrounded by soft candlelight, families, residents and staff gathered to pay their respects.
Staff members prepared a quiet “reflection table” featuring the poem In Flanders Fields, along with a candle and a remembrance backdrop. Throughout the day, anyone who wished could pause at the display to honour those who sacrificed their lives serving Canada.
“It was a beautiful and moving week, one that reminded us all of the courage, service and sacrifices that allow us to enjoy the freedoms we have today,” Karla says.
“As the life enrichment manager, I am incredibly proud of our team across every department for helping create such meaningful moments for our residents. Their compassion and creativity ensured that this important week was honoured with dignity, respect and warmth.”
Karla adds that it was important to everyone at the home that Canadian veterans be honoured.
“Because of their bravery, we live in freedom and it is our privilege to remember them.”
