A group from Lanark Village is seen here at Niagara Falls during a recent outing.

A group of residents from Lanark Village recently took the longest road trip in the Kitchener seniors living community's history.

The residents, accompanied by a group of team members, travelled more than 140 kilometres to spend a day in two of the most scenic areas of southwestern Ontario – Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake.

The Lanark Village activities-and-events calendar is adapted each month to fulfil residents' requests for outings and programming, and Niagara Falls is a destination frequently requested, says Lisa Rathier, Lanark Village's fun co-ordinator.

The first stop of the journey was Niagara-on-the-Lake, a town noted for both its beauty and rich history. There, residents and team members made the most of the nice weather by having a picnic and touring the town.

The group also made a stop at a local market to pick up some fresh Niagara Region fruit before heading on to Niagara Falls to take in the “beautiful scenery” at the world-famous landmark, Lisa says, adding this included a stop at Table Rock Centre to get a first-class view of the Horseshoe Falls.

While in Niagara Falls, the Lanark Village group also made a stop at Maple Leaf Place, a Canadian-themed attraction that includes maple syrup tasting, a souvenir shop and a restaurant.

There, everyone got to sample maple syrup and hand-made chocolate, Lisa notes.

Lisa says making residents' wishes come true is one of her favourite aspects of her job, and this trip solidified that notion.

“Fulfilling the requests of the residents is a big part of my job,” she tells S&R Today. “If Robert, our driver, and I can make a trip happen, we make it happen.”

The Village's fun co-ordinator adds that the residents' reaction to events like this makes it all worthwhile.

“Seeing everyone enjoying themselves, sharing memories and making new ones is one of the best parts of being the fun co-ordinator,” Lisa says.
