To engage residents and team members in the Halloween spirit at Westmount Gardens, Stacy Danielson, the lead for the London, Ont. long-term care community's social committee, organized a nurses' station decorating contest for each neighbourhood.

In the days leading up to the final judging on Oct. 30, the day before Halloween, Adnan Resh, Westmount's life enrichment manager, said the contest “has been nothing short of spectacular.”

When the contest ended, the residents, who served as judges, crowned the Iris neighbourhood the winner. As a prize, team members working on all three shifts in the Iris neighbourhood will be treated to a pizza party.

“I haven't seen the staff have so much fun as I have with all the spirit of making sure their unit looks better than the other,” Adnan tells S&R Today. “Some were still hiding a few tricks up their sleeve until the day of voting to pull them out as the wow factor, but all of the (decorations) have been out of this world.”

Adnan says team members from across the home were talking about how good the decorations looked and complimented their co-workers on the great job they did getting the stations in their units decorated with Halloween themes.

“I love seeing all the joy and how happy the staff are,” Adnan says. “The amount of fun I have seen with this competition is just crazy, and I am sure we will be seeing more events like this pop up – Christmas is just around the corner, after all.”

Adnan commends Stacy for her innovation and talent for thinking outside the box when it comes to creating fun activities.

“Stacy is always full of great ideas, and I am sure she's got the next thing already lined up,” he says. “Her high energy also sparks up a lot of joy.”
