A Trillium Villa Nursing Home resident is crediting the Sarnia long-term care community's nursing rehabilitation program with helping him maintain his independence.
Sandy Berriault entered the program in April 2022 and immediately began training with the nursing rehab team to improve his active range of motion (AROM) and transferring.
After quickly improving, Sandy graduated to walking programs while continuing AROM training.
He remained in the nursing rehab program until February 2025, when he was sidelined due to illness and required a full mechanical lift for transfers.
However, he continued his physiotherapy training and re-entered the nursing rehab program in early September for AROM and bed mobility to rebuild his strength.
Working with nursing rehab team members Chiquita McLaughlin and Emily Johnson, Sandy progressed from a full mechanical lift to a sit-to-stand lift, and now only requires assistance from two staff members for transfers.
Sandy eventually regained enough strength to go from two-person maximal assistance for bed mobility to one-person maximal assistance, with the current goal of requiring only one-person extensive assistance.
In September, Sandy reached his current AROM goal of lifting two-pound weights for 10 repetitions. His new goal is to increase this to 11 repetitions.
Sandy says he enjoys the nursing rehab program and has maintained his independence thanks to the nursing rehab and physio programs.
He says Trillium Villa's nursing rehab program has helped increase his quality of life, adding that his wife will soon be moving into the home and will join the program.
“I love nursing rehab; it has kept my independence and my strength up, and working with Chiquita is great,” Sandy says.
