Canine friends help Heron Terrace celebrate National Grandparents Day
Residents, families and team members enjoy dog show and heartwarming interactions

Heron Terrace residents, families and team members celebrated National Grandparents Day with a visit from some special canine friends.
A group of dogs and their owners from Border City Barkers Agility Club were at the Windsor long-term care community for a dog show organized by the life enrichment team that day, and the event was everything team members were hoping it would be.
“The weather couldn't have been more perfect, and about 50 residents came out to enjoy the event,” Sheila Dela Pena-Romero, Heron Terrace's life enrichment manager, tells S&R Today.
“We were delighted to welcome Border City Barkers, who brought around 15 friendly and talented dogs to participate.”
Border City Barkers has been supporting Heron Terrace's Grandparents Day celebrations for three consecutive years, Sheila notes. Each year, she adds, they bring new members, volunteers and “their amazing fur babies – always surprising us with new tricks and heartwarming interactions,” Sheila says.
The Border City Barkers' website describes the organization as “a group of dog enthusiasts who promote education and safety in the sport of agility.”
Sheila adds that the residents, family members and staff who attended had “a fantastic time together,” and for many it was a time for fond reminiscing.
“It reminded them of their childhood fun memories with their own fur babies,” she says. “The smiles, laughter and joy shared throughout the day made it a truly special celebration of the grandparents in our community.”
National Grandparents Day is held the second Sunday in September in many countries around the world to celebrate grandparents. The day was first recognized in 1978 in the U.S.
