Rosewood Village marks World Senior Citizen's Day with dunk-tank fundraiser

Residents, families and staff raise money for Humane Society while sharing summer fun

A dunk tank was the centrepiece of the World Senior Citizen's Day celebration at Rosewood Village.

Residents and team members at Rosewood Village celebrated World Senior Citizen's Day with a big splash – many big splashes, to be precise.

That's because the Sarnia seniors living community rented a dunk tank for the Aug. 21 event, giving residents a chance to dunk team members while raising funds for the Sarnia District Humane Society.

“Since starting this job, I have tried to search up random theme days to bring some humour and daily themes to the activity calendars,” explains Alexandra Doornbosch, the Village's fun co-ordinator.

“When I saw that it was Senior Citizen's Day on Aug. 21, I knew I wanted to do something fun for the residents, especially because the summer was coming to an end soon.”

The dunk tank was borrowed from the same business on Blackwell Road that lent the Village a giant yellow inflatable duck earlier this summer (see July 7 S&R Today story).

“We had this (idea) in our back pocket for a little bit,” Alexandra says. “Senior Citizen's Day just seemed like the right time to do something completely new and different.”

Residents enjoyed watching team members getting dunked, with many throwing balls at the tank's bull's-eye to send them into the water.

“They also found lots of joy seeing the children dunk their parent, or children of other staff members getting involved,” Alexandra says.

Alexandra adds that residents and team members wanted to use the event to support the local community. They chose the Sarnia District Humane Society, raising money and collecting donations of blankets, towels and dog food, which will be dropped off this week.

Beyond the fun and fundraising, Alexandra says the event was also successful in bringing residents, their families and team members together.

“In my view, this event allowed the residents to bond with the staff in a different way than what they're used to,” she says. “Instead of having the nursing staff take care of them physically, or having the dietary staff serve them food, they got to experience the fun sides of the staff members.”

World Senior Citizen's Day dates back to 1988 in the U.S., when then-president Ronald Reagan proclaimed Aug. 21 as National Day of the Third Age. Other countries later adopted the date to recognize senior citizens for their achievements and contributions.
