Village on the Thames fun co-ordinator Diamond Zelina recently brought her family's tradition of “Christmas in July” to the residents of the Chatham-Kent seniors living community, and the program was a major hit with everyone.
“My family does (Christmas in July), so I thought the residents would love it – and they did,” Diamond tells S&R Today.
Outside, the mercury rose to 33C on July 25, the day of the event, but inside the Village, the spirit of the holiday season made it feel more like December than midsummer.
Diamond and other team members spent the week before the event putting up Christmas decorations, such as snowflakes and red balloons, in the Village's activity room to give the area some yuletide flair.
Christmas in July included musical entertainment, along with refreshments, including cheese, crackers and grapes, with cheesecake for dessert. Red wine and pop were also served.
There were even local vendors who stopped by to sell Christmas gifts to residents and team members. One vendor sold Mary Kay products and another sold crafts made from seashells.
In keeping with the atmosphere, many residents wore clothing with the traditional colours of the holiday season – red, green and white – as well as fun hats and Christmas headbands, Diamond notes.
“It was a lot of fun and brought everyone together for a great time,” she says.
