Guessing game sparks laughs and surprises at Southgate Village

Team members' hidden talents generate plenty of chatter

A Southgate Village team member wanted to uncover her co-workers' hidden talents, so she came up with a playful contest to bring them to the surface.

Valerie Judas, the Kingsville seniors living community's fun co-ordinator, recently invited her colleagues to jot down their hidden talents on slips of paper. She then challenged residents and her fellow team members to guess which talent belonged to whom.

As it turned out, the Village's team members are full of surprises.

Valerie says balancing poles on fingertips and milking cows were among “the most surprising” talents staff possess.

Other talents team members listed included clarinet playing, baton twirling and home remodelling.

But beyond learning about these talents, Valerie says it was the lively buzz the game sparked throughout the Village that made the effort worthwhile.

“The chatter in the building was amazing,” she tells S&R Today. “Residents and staff were questioning each other – are you the singer? What is your talent? You’re the one that milks the cow? I was surprised at some of the talents the staff had.”

Residents and staff had three days to connect hidden talents with team members. Valerie marked their entries with the correct answers once the guessing wrapped up.

When the results were tallied, one staff member correctly matched 11 talents to win a prize. Among the residents, four tied with two right answers each, and they took home prizes as well.

For Valerie, the highlight wasn't who won but the engagement that made the program special.

“Listening to them chatter with each other to figure out the right answers was heartwarming and a little funny,” she says.

Up next: Valerie plans to turn the tables and uncover the residents' own hidden talents.
