Mother's Day is always a meaningful occasion at Lanark Heights, but this year's celebration stood out with a vibrant tea social where residents donned handmade fascinators they crafted.

In the week leading up to the event on May 11, the Kitchener long-term care community's residents and team members collaborated to create the colourful and eye-catching fascinators, which are formal headpieces often worn at festive events.

“Many of our residents told me they would be spending Mother’s Day here, so the Lanark Heights team wanted to do something extra special,” life enrichment manager Karla Verdesoto tells S&R Today.

The tea social welcomed family members in addition to the 50 residents who attended.

“Family members were welcome to come; the event was well attended,” Karla says.

Guests enjoyed tastings of three different teas and an assortment of desserts, including raspberry mousse, Black Forest cake and cupcakes.

To complete the festive atmosphere, the space was fully decorated, and each seat was set with an extra fascinator – lovingly handmade by other residents – as a surprise gift.

“We told them it was a gift and they could take it with them,” Karla said.
