A Heron Terrace resident recently celebrated her 101st birthday at the Windsor long-term care community, and team members worked together to ensure it was a memorable day for her.
Resident Audrey was born Feb. 27, 1924, in Liverpool, England. On her birthday, her family and Heron Terrace team members greeted Audrey first thing in the morning to give her their best wishes.
Heron Terrace's hairdresser and team members made sure Audrey looked “amazing” on her special day, and she got extra treats during mealtimes and was able to attend the evening's Pub Night, where she had some non-alcoholic beverages and potato chips, says life enrichment manager Sheila Dela Pena-Romero.
“Audrey said she 'felt like a queen' when everybody came to see her early in the morning, just to greet her a happy birthday,” Sheila tells S&R Today.
During the day's entertainment, Audrey got a VIP front-row seat and “could not believe it” when the musician called out her name and sang Happy Birthday with everyone in the lobby, Sheila adds.
“Audrey had a blast and was so grateful for all the staff that made her birthday extra special,” Sheila says.
Two days later, Audrey received a special gift from the office of Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens in recognition of her birthday.
“She was so proud to show it off to the residents and staff,” Sheila says.
Asked what the secret was to living a long, happy life, Audrey says it's all about keeping a positive attitude.
“Make sure to choose to be happy every day and appreciate what you have,” she says.
Sheila notes that Heron Terrace has other residents who are centenarians and team members will be helping them celebrate their birthdays as well.
“We are lucky to be able to witness and celebrate the special events of their lives,” she says.
