Landmark Village fun co-ordinator Brent Hart recalls how more than a year ago he was asked by colleague Tamara Milligan if he would help her lead the residents of the Sarnia seniors living community in a karaoke program.
“My first thought was, 'I don't sing,' but after Tamara assured me she'd sing with me, I thought, 'why not give it a try?' ” Brent tells S&R Today.
Since then, Brent and Tamara, who was then Landmark's business manager and is today the executive director, have been hosting monthly karaoke events for residents, and the residents have been loving the experience, Brent says.
During the past year, the event has continued to garner more resident interest, and attendance keeps climbing, he adds, noting these events bring residents and team members together to have fun singing their favourite songs.
“Residents look forward to it each month and we have a half a dozen who enjoy getting up to sing, even if it takes a little coaxing,” Brent says.
Family members have also been joining in the fun, and often there are duets, Brent says, adding one resident, Bill, recently sang a song with his daughter. A new resident, Paul, was also joined on stage by his daughter when he took to the stage for the first time.
Brent says the karaoke events underscore the value of teamwork when it comes to creating meaningful programming for residents.
“The great thing is that it takes a team to create all the fun that happens here at Landmark,” he says. “I would not have thought monthly karaoke would be the hit it has become, and it would not have happened without fellow staff encouraging it.”
