Moving into a long-term care community can be a major step in life, and the Behavioural Supports Ontario (BSO) team at Twin Lakes Terrace is there to help new residents adjust to the change and thrive.

When resident Maureen moved into the Sarnia long-term care community in November, the BSO team and front-line staff worked with her and her family to create a plan to help Maureen transition into life at Twin Lakes Terrace.

One activity Maureen is fond of is putting puzzles together. Upon learning this, team members started encouraging Maureen to work on puzzles.

At first, team members helped Maureen with new puzzles over the course of several days, but before long she was quickly completing puzzles on her own, says registered practical nurse and BSO team member Danielle Rogers.

Maureen has also been visiting the Twin Lakes Terrace library and participating in pet therapy programs, which she has enjoyed, Danielle adds.

“Maureen and many of the team members have quickly built a rapport and established a routine for activities within her day, in addition to the many calendar events provided by the life enrichment team which Maureen enjoys attending,” Danielle tells S&R Today.

“Through staff dedication in all departments, Maureen is settling in well to her new environment. She has become familiar with the team that cares for her and is always willing to put on a smile and participate in her routine and events within the home.”

BSO is a provincial initiative to help enhance quality of life for seniors. The funding, which is provided to long-term care homes through Ontario's 14 local health integration networks, is largely put towards staff education.
