Landmark Village raised $800 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada (HSF) during the Sarnia seniors living community's annual fundraiser for the charity, nearly doubling the amount collected in 2024.
February is Heart Month, which is dedicated to raising awareness about heart disease and stroke across Canada. Landmark Village focuses on events to raise money for the charity throughout the month, with one special themed event each year.
In 2024, the Landmark Village team organized a bingo tournament for the main event, raising $415 for HSF.
This year's themed event was a casino day held the afternoon of Feb. 26. The event featured a blackjack table, a craps game and a human slot machine featuring team members as the reels, which proved to be the favourite among residents, says Brent Hart, Landmark Village's fun co-ordinator.
“The afternoon was all built around the fun slot machine game; we got the idea from seeing videos online and made our own,” he tells S&R Today.
“We had all the residents sitting watching the slot machine, and laughter and smiles filled the room.”
The afternoon included finger food prepared by the Landmark Village food services team as well as a performance from Wallaceburg-based singer Jeff Black.
Other HSF fundraising events in February included a bingo and a raffle. During the bingo, residents purchased cards for $10 and were awarded prizes for wins. The raffle was held on Valentine's Day and featured a gift basket filled with Valentine's Day-themed goodies that was awarded to the winner.
Brent says this year's HSF fundraiser was once again a way for residents to have fun while raising money for a worthy cause.
“All this fun was for a great cause, and in the end, we will be donating a total of $800 to the Heart and Stroke Foundation,” he says.
