After pandemic restrictions were eased, Heron Terrace residents' council pitched an idea for a baking and cooking program, and team members at the Windsor, Ont. long-term care community recently delivered on that request.
The life enrichment team organized a make-your-own-pizza social as a Saturday afternoon program, and residents were delighted with the outcome, says life enrichment manager Sheila Dela Pena-Romero.
Sheila says at first the program was going to be aimed at Heron Terrace's Women's Club, but many of the men wanted to be involved as well, so they were invited by their spouses and friends.
During the program, residents made pizzas by rolling out dough, spreading tomato sauce and cheese, and adding the toppings of their choice.
Some residents showed skills not seen before, Sheila says.
“Many residents excelled and showed their natural leadership skills,” she tells S&R Today.
One resident in particular was amazed by their pizza-making abilities, Sheila adds.
“This is amazing,” the resident exclaimed. “I have never thought that I could make my own pizza with my own recipe.”
Given the success of the cooking-and-baking program, Sheila says there will be repeats.
“Everyone had a great time and enjoyed this fun experience, and they are already looking forward to the next menu,” she says.
