Two Village on the St. Clair residents spearheaded a “very successful” fundraiser at the Sarnia seniors living community that netted $600 for the Sarnia-Lambton Children's Aid Society to help buy holiday gifts for the children they serve.

Winnie Hamilton and Linda Walker “had hearts to give and an idea” to create a white elephant fundraiser that would benefit the organization, which advocates for children and youth, says Anastasia Prins, the Village on the St. Clair's resident services manager.

A white elephant fundraiser is an event where pre-owned items are sold to raise money for a worthy cause.

The Village has found success with previous white elephant fundraisers for its residents' council, so it seemed like the perfect way to support a local charity, Anastasia adds.

“The white elephant was something that we've done in the past that was a success for residents' funds, so this year, instead of the money going towards the resident fund, (the residents) wanted to make sure the money went to another good cause,” she tells S&R Today.

The residents decided on the Children's Aid Society as the beneficiary.

Anastasia says the idea for the fundraiser began with Linda, who wanted to include her fellow residents in the project.

“Linda was wanting to do something this year and decided to get others involved, and this was a great way to do it,” she says.

Winnie notes that the funds the society receives throughout the year cannot be used to buy gifts for children they serve, so the money from the Village's fundraiser came in handy during the holiday season.

“And boy, were they glad, because the Children's Aid Society only provides gifts for the children from donations,” she says.

Linda adds that fundraising to help local children was important to the residents.

“Christmas time is for the children and that was something important to keep in mind,” she says.
