When Joan Potter started working to regain her mobility by participating in Trillium Villa Nursing Home's nursing rehabilitation program, her goal was simply to stand without assistance.
But she quickly reached that goal and soon began setting new ones.
Joan came to the Sarnia long-term care community Oct. 4 and began participating in the nursing rehab program Oct. 29.
At first, Joan worked on transfer and active range-of-motion (AROM) exercises to help improve her strength and balance, explains Ashley Birch, Trillium Villa's resident care co-ordinator.
When Joan began the program, she was able to complete 10 repetitions of her exercises using one-pound weights. She could also complete five sit-to-stands and spend five minutes on the peddler.
After five weeks, Joan increased her resistance to two-pound weights and was able to complete 10 repetitions. She also doubled her sit-to-stands to 10 and doubled her time on the peddler to 10 minutes.
She completes walking, NuStep and balance exercises in the physiotherapy program three times a week, Ashley adds.
With her goal of standing without assistance complete, Joan's next challenge is to maintain and improve her independence with her walker, Ashley says.
To achieve this, Joan's target is to be able to complete 11 sit-to-stands, 11 repetitions of her exercises using two-pound weights and 11 minutes on the peddler.
“Joan is very happy with the progress she has made,” Ashley says.
