Southgate Village recently helped a couple celebrate their 63rd anniversary – but the account of how Susan and Adrian met is the big story, says Valerie Judas, the Kingsville, Ont. seniors living community's fun co-ordinator.
Valerie recently sat down with Susan, who is a Southgate Village resident, and her husband, Adrian, to talk about how they met – and they preface their story by saying “not all love stories are fairy tales.”
Susan says it all began when she went on a double date with her boyfriend, who happened to be Adrian's brother, and Adrian and his girlfriend at the time.
Susan says Adrian was upset with his brother for not walking her to the door at the end of their date, so Adrian did the honours.
With that, Adrian broke up with the girl he was thinking of marrying and started dating Susan, Susan says.
Susan states that after they started dating, she would be at work and Adrian would drive by in his car with another girl almost on his lap, tooting the horn as he went by.
This is where the fun-loving couple are at odds.
“Now, Susie,” Adrian interjects, with a smile on his face, “you have to tell it right.”
After marrying in 1961 Adrian and Susan enjoyed the day with family and friends to celebrate. However, this celebration was short-lived because there were peppers to pack at their farm that Monday morning, the couple recalls.
Their farm kept growing and became a major supplier of vegetables in the community and beyond. Their family also grew to include five children, nine grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
Susan has been living at Southgate Village for several months and Adrian comes to visit every day, “always telling the best jokes and wonderful stories as staff and residents alike sit and listen,” Valerie says.
“You can hear Adrian's laugh throughout the building, and his stories are never embellished,” Valerie laughs, emphasizing the words “never embellished.”
