Waterloo Heights recently honoured the 26 volunteers who contribute their time to helping residents and team members at the Waterloo, Ont. seniors living community.
A social was held in honour of the volunteers, who included people from the community as well as Waterloo Heights residents and the tenants who live in the building's apartments.
“Each volunteer was thanked individually in front of the attendees and given an appreciation gift,” Waterloo Heights activity director Jacqui Metzloff tells S&R Today.
“Our volunteers are such wonderful people and they have become an essential part of our community.”
Volunteers from outside of Waterloo Heights include parishioners from St. James'-Rosemount United Church and Knox Presbyterian Church, who provide monthly services; volunteers who run programs each week and on weekends; and others who come to Waterloo Heights for special events and assist with seating and serving refreshments.
The resident volunteers help with the Waterloo Heights newsletter, assist in the library, and serve on residents' council, Jacqui notes.
“Some of our volunteers are past staff members who love coming in to help with open houses, Olympic games, big events and more,” Jacqui says, adding this helps former team members stay connected to Waterloo Heights.
“It's a great opportunity for them to remain a part of our community.”
Jacqui says volunteers are a central part of life at Waterloo Heights and they go a long way to enrich the lives of the residents they serve.
“I'm very grateful for the many things our volunteers do,” she says. “They have created relationships with our residents that really make a difference in their lives.”
