With winter approaching, Waterloo Heights residents and team members have been working hard to help ensure those less fortunate across Waterloo Region have access to food and warm clothing.

In September, the Waterloo Heights knitting group changed its name to Knitting for a Cause. Since then, group members have been knitting socks, scarves, hats and mitts for people and families in need, explains Waterloo Heights activity director Jacqui Metzloff.

Lots of residents who do not knit wanted to be involved with the project in some way, so a representative from KmW Clothing, a local retailer, stopped by to sell socks that could be donated to charity.

“This allowed all residents who wanted to participate the opportunity to give to a great cause,” Jacqui tells S&R Today.

All clothing items will be donated to House of Friendship, an organization that helps individuals and families who need supports, including housing, food and treatment for addiction.

In October, Waterloo Heights residents and team members launched a food drive to support the Food Bank of Waterloo Region.

Residents and staff have been collecting non-perishable food items to donate to the food bank since then. This has been an initiative residents wanted to start, Jacqui notes.

“As the need for assistance continues to grow, our residents have expressed a concern for families who are unable to keep healthy meals on the table,” she says.

“It was important to them that we do a food drive and help in any way we can.”
