Before resident Michael Atkins started participating in Trillium Villa Nursing Home's nursing rehabilitation program in March, he had sustained 10 falls, but he was determined to regain his strength and balance.
And, thanks to his hard work and perseverance, he's accomplishing that mission and setting new goals for himself.
Working on his rehabilitation regimen with rehab aides Chiquita McLaughlin and Kiera Drope, Michael has been focusing on improving his active range of motion (AROM) and transferring.
He started his AROM program completing 10 repetitions of his exercises, then moved to 12 reps using three-pound weights. He is also peddling for 10 minutes each session.
Michael has improved his strength so much that he now completes two sets of 12 exercises using three-pound weights, explains Trillium Villa resident care co-ordinator Ashley Birch.
Michael's current AROM goals are to continue increasing strength in his arms and legs and have no falls. After reaching his transfer goal of completing 10 sit-to-stand exercises, Michael is aiming to complete 13.
Ashley adds that Michael is also participating in physiotherapy three times per week to improve his walking, balance and strength.
Ashley says Michael has been a devoted self-advocate for his recovery and has put lots of effort into accomplishing his goals.
“Michael loves the program and never misses a day,” she tells S&R Today. “Michael is very motivated and loves to exercise. Truly, without nursing rehab and physio, Michael would not have the strength he has today.”
Michael agrees.
“I love the nursing rehab program and I am now able to stand up without falling over,” he says.
