Waterloo Heights residents are pictured here interacting with donkeys at a sanctuary in southwestern Ontario.

A recent trip to a donkey sanctuary provided a unique experience for several Waterloo Heights residents that allowed them to interact with these gentle and friendly animals.

Located on a 200-acre farm in Puslinch, Ont., about 40 kilometres east of the Waterloo seniors living community, the Donkey Sanctuary of Canada is committed to providing “a lifelong home to donkeys, mules and hinnies who are unwanted, neglected or abused, or whose owners can no longer care for them,” according to its website.

Residents spent two hours at the sanctuary learning about the more than 80 donkeys living on the farm and spending time with many of them.

“The donkeys were very friendly and came right up to the fences to get pets,” Waterloo Heights activity director Jacqui Metzloff tells S&R Today.

“The farm takes excellent care of the donkeys and rehabilitates those who have come from an unhappy beginning.”

Jacqui adds that Waterloo Heights and the Donkey Sanctuary of Canada have a community connection, and several residents sponsor donkeys living on the farm.

Some of the residents who are sponsoring donkeys were among those attending the outing. Residents who are sponsoring donkeys but were not able to attend the trip were provided photos of the donkeys they're helping.

Jacqui says some of the highlights of the outing included brushing one of the donkeys and getting a behind-the-scenes look at how the animals are cared for every day.

And, of course, everyone enjoyed simply watching the donkeys be donkeys.

“It was a lot of fun to watch them play and frolic through the large fields of the farm,” Jacqui says.
