Resident Ken McFadden is well known for his extraordinary singing talent among everyone at the Village on the Thames.

But while Ken has often wowed small groups in the Chatham-Kent seniors living community's sunroom, he had never performed in front of a larger audience.

That was until recently, when entertainers Bob and Iris were at the Village and Ken was encouraged to show everyone what an excellent singer he is.

Ken was reluctant at first, but the residents insisted he get up in front of everyone and sing.

So, he did, and everyone was amazed by his voice, says Village on the Thames fun co-ordinator Diamond Zelina.

“He had never just stood up in front of everyone and just sang like that, but he got up there and he was singing with them and it was a really awesome experience,” she tells S&R Today.

Diamond says residents were taken by Ken's performance and were happy to see him singing for a larger crowd.

“They all know he is a good singer and they will all listen to him singing in the sunroom and they will clap, and they encouraged him to get up there and sing,” she says.

“He did an amazing job singing with them and everyone was clapping and cheering him on – the residents were all so supportive.

“It was just a really cool experience to see him get up there and sing. Everyone was so happy for him.

And, perhaps most importantly, Ken found the experience to be empowering.

“He told me he had never done that before,” Diamond says. “It was a new experience for him and he really enjoyed it.”
