Westmount Gardens' 2024 classic-car show wasn't just a chance for residents to check out some hot rods – it was an opportunity to build relationships and make new friends.
The Sept. 16 event saw more than 25 classic cars roll into the London, Ont. long-term care community's parking lot. Residents had opportunities to look at the cars, meet the owners and ask questions.
This was the second straight year Westmount Gardens hosted the event.
Adnan Resh, Westmount Gardens' life enrichment manager, says this year's turnout “was even better than last year” and included music and a barbecue.
The organizer, John, has experience hosting car shows at long-term care homes throughout the city and did an outstanding job for Westmount residents, Adnan says.
Throughout the event, Adnan says new friendships and connections were being forged between the car owners and residents, families, staff and volunteers.
Some of the car owners had connections to the home, Adnan says. Some owners had loved ones living at Westmount in the past. One car buff was the brother of a current resident, and others knew some residents.
The car show was originally scheduled for mid-July, but due to a heat wave it was postponed until September. And the weather couldn't have been any better, Adnan says, noting the skies were clear and the weather was “just perfect.”
There was also a barbecue coinciding with the car show, and, to make the event extra-special, root-beer floats were handed out to residents, which Adnan says “went over very well.”
“We ran out of our root-beer floats and nearly ran out of burgers, which means it was very busy,” he tells S&R Today.
“The great thing was that a lot of families also came out to enjoy the car show with their loved ones.”
Adnan is tipping his hat to the life enrichment team and volunteers who helped bring residents to the car show as well as to the food services team members who stayed to help.
“It was amazing seeing everyone come together as one,” he says. “Overall, this event was very successful bringing everyone together and having that strong community connection through fun, laughter and great food.”
